Title: Cures
Hestia - April 16, 2006 11:33 AM (GMT)
I'm having hic-ups, does anyone know what to do to stop 'em?
And no, I didn't have too much wine...
Knuxs - April 16, 2006 11:42 AM (GMT)
 lol. not funny if its you! But yeah... :Wink1:
A good fright is supposed to stop them... something about a cold key down your back too.
I like the idea of holding your nose and swallowing when you hic up. That sometimes works for me.
Rosie - April 17, 2006 08:15 AM (GMT)
JUST HOLD YOUR BREATH!
That usually works.
ps. 2000th post?
Hestia - April 17, 2006 09:41 AM (GMT)
Thankfully they've stopped (after about 15 minutes). My mum is a bit worried though, she thinks it's unusually for someone to have occasional hicups without a clear reason.
I don't really mind though, it is a funny feeling, especially when you yawn or swallow at the time of a hicup. But I do get out of breath because of hicups. That's the hardest part.
Rosie - April 17, 2006 10:27 AM (GMT)
If I get hiccups, i'll continue to get them through out the day.

I always found that shooting yourself in the foot cures you of many things; your limp, that ingrown toe-nail, not having to go to phys ed; oh, hiccups included too.
Hestia - April 24, 2006 12:08 PM (GMT)
Great! Anyone got a spare gun?
maddy - April 24, 2006 12:16 PM (GMT)
We have a shot gun!
But I said foot, not feet, so the shotty won't be any use.
I suppose you will have to suffer with THE HICCUPS for a long time. Such a long time. Woe.

A great remedy for Hiccups is just to concentrate on your breathing...slowly breath in and out....for about 10 minutes and the hiccups will be gone...
Hiccups are usually caused by uncontroled breathing (like when you eat or drink too fast..when you laugh too long etc.)..slow breathing will reverse the cause of the hiccup ;)
If that doesn't help try drinking a glass of water with both your nose and ears closed (so there's no circulation of air)..try to drink as much as you can without breathing...
One of the two always works for me..

did somebody mention the drinking from a cup while holding it upside down-ish? that usually works.
and I think I heard about eating a teaspoon of sugar. Hmm, it was either sugar or peanutbutter. Forgot.
Hestia - April 27, 2006 08:53 PM (GMT)
Hmm, hiccups caused by uncontrolled breathing. Really? Cuz I seem to get them out of nowhere. Will keep it in mind though, thanks!

hiccups are a muscle spasm (diaphragm, big muscle which controls your breathing) and i think your supposed to take a deep breath and push up underneath your ribcage for 10 seconds, but i think that that just makes you feel a bit like a prat! failing that just breathe in and hold for a very long time (stop when you turn blue! :)
Lovealot - June 21, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
I get hiccups all the time and they are so load. I only get a couple at a time most the time but i have them several times a day!
I went to the doctor about it and they couldn't suggest why it was happening all the time!
I often make people jump with my hiccups and when my friends first here them they dont believe that they are hiccups! They can also be really embarrasing especially in public places :red:
I have found that drinking from a glass of water with a spoon in it helps to cure them!

Yeah, I think Tom was right, but my friends tease that it's this whole mind over matter thing..
Our cure?
Think about cows eating grass..

Ahh, you'd already said half of what I was going to say as I was going through the thread! But I'll still give the second half as it works for me EVERY time.
Like Tom says, it's a spasm in the diaphragm that forces the air in your lungs out quicker than usual. The best thing to do is to lean over the edge of a chair/bed backwards. Gravity will pull the diaphragm up, stopping it from pushing the air up your lungs and relaxes the spasm quickly. Always works for me first time within a couple of minutes.
Another great tip if your prone to travel sickness, or any feeling of physical sickness, is to press your right thumb about an inch below the hinge of your inner left wrist. Again, works for me every time within a couple of minutes.

Does anyone have a home-cure for waspstings? My mum made me put vinegar on my waspsting, but it smells and the spot still aches.
Tigerlily - July 27, 2006 01:31 PM (GMT)
I'm obviously bored and don't have a heap of a lot of work to do. :hee:
the only usefull solution I could find is: icecubes. Put an icecube on it.
Hestia - July 27, 2006 04:02 PM (GMT)
Yeah, the swelling has dimished a lot since I put ice on it. Thanks!
I read on the internet that vinegar on any sting of an insect doesn't work at all. I've had a tissue drenched in vinegar on it for over an hour and it smells badly, and I can't recommend it at all. I also thought the vinegar on my skin hurt more than the waspsting itself.
Apparently, sucking out the poison isn't recommended too. So you shouldn't try that either.
