Title: the 10.000 steps a day hype
Tigerlily - March 20, 2006 12:33 PM (GMT)
I'm a bit behind on things. My mum keeps telling me I need to read the paper more often and watch the news. So it wasn't until yesterday that I heard about that 10.000 step "hype".
It's healthy for a person to take 10.000 steps a day.
I Don't have a pedometer so to get some kind fo idea about my steps I've been counting them for most of the day. And omg I'm nowhere near 10.000.
I walk to work every day. I go to the supermarket everyday. My office is at the top of the building so I walk up and down a lot. But still after all that I don't think I've reached 5.000 yet.
How far does a person have go walk to reach the 10.000?
Anyway, I just wanted to know how much you walk a day. How many steps do you take?
Also what are you're views on this?
I'm not getting too hung up on the whole idea. I know I live healthy. I don't need 10.000 steps to for that.

Part of it is hype! Like some people could do loads of exercise without ever taking a step! :o
Also do get a measuring thing because it all adds up a lot, just going down stairs in the morning to get brekkie sorted racked me up almost 300 steps! :o
Dancing would be a good way to. (tudy<

10.000 steps is somewhere around 7000 meters, I think. (Depends on the size of the steps/strides)
For some people, I think it's good to join in the hype. Including me. I sat on my lazy bum all day. I do run to the toilet and walk back and forth between kitchen and room around 20 times a day. But at days I don't have to go shopping or go to class, I will never make those 10.000 steps a day... Unless I take very small steps.

I took a walk this afternoon (because of this thread, but also because I felt it was necessary to enjoy the afternoon sun on this last day of winter) and I tried to count my steps. But I lost count a lot, often after about 100 steps.
I think my walk (about 15-20 minutes) got me about 2000/3000 steps further. But still I am nowhere closer to the 10.000 steps.
Bummer I don't have anything to fret about, then I could pace my room up and down, getting more steps.
I am getting obsessed with these 10.000 steps!

It would be interesting to see how many steps I take in a day! I don't know, but I think it could be quite a lot.
On a normal day I run around a lot in the morning in a hurry to get ready  then I mostly get a ride to college (I only take the bus when no-one's available to drive me, I know it's awful) then dance all day. When I get home I walk around the house a lot while I'm doing things. Or if I've got a show rehearsal that night then I think the rehearsal alone probably racks up 10,000 steps because not only am I dancing but I'm also running around like a headless chicken trying to make the costume changes in 1 minute flat lol.
