After two discussions in several threads, I thought it was about time that we designed a place for discussing Television (and other media) and Society.
What is the relation between both? Does TV influence people? Is TV evil in essence? What do you think?

TV is the way people see and make sense of the world, course it has an effect. :slappy:

Think it can be a good thing for certain issues, but also bad if the network or producers have a bias towards something i.e religion, family life, racism etc.

Then again you could argue that if people are at home watching so much prejudice telly that they cant think for themselves then, they arent any threat to anyone in the real world.

So TV has a strong propagandic function?

of course it does, everything kids play comes from telivision, they learn words from telivision and they can even learn right and wrong through telivision.

I work at a childrens project and there have been some shocking incidences when i kid has done somthing which he/she saw on teli, but then again, i suppose thats just not down to the telli (parents aswell)

also adverts, you see loads of adverts aimed at kids, for sweets (which imo should be made illigal) and so many other products, why? because children have a large influence on their parents shopping and they're more easily manipulated *nods*

I just discovered I am accepted in a University course called 'Media and Society'! (woW> I can't wait to discover how exactly Media and Society interact with each other...does the Media respond to society, or does Society respond to the media...I'm so thrilled to be accepted in this course..it was the one course I was dying to get in to! :lol:
