Title: The D and F-awards
Description: Post your thoughts/categories here

Hestia - October 3, 2005 08:56 AM (GMT)
It has been suggested that we can hand out medals to members who deserve them. So this thread is a place where we can first decide on the categories in which we give out the medals.

Miranda has already made some suggestions:

*Biggest Dom picture spammer
*Most concerned about others
*Best advice-giver
*Wittiest remark

Then of course:
*Best Banner
*Best Wallpaper
*Best Fanart
*Best Fanfic
*Best Lost-theory

*Best Musical Accompaniment (For the person who suggests the best new songs)
*Best Random Thought

Oh, I could go on forever but that won't leave any room for other people's suggestions. So, please help set up the Dominic and Friends-award show!

LATEST ADDITIONS
*Craziest Fangirl/guy
*Best Comeback

how about craziest fangirl/guy?

Hestia - October 3, 2005 10:10 AM (GMT)
Accepted! And I'm defo gonna try out for that categorie! :hee:

Tigerlily - October 3, 2005 10:13 AM (GMT)
Hahaha
I won't I'm as sane as a pink bunny doing the hokey pokey

Did I mention best comeback? (for those who've been away but decided to return to us?)

Hestia - October 3, 2005 10:22 AM (GMT)
Yes, I'm sorry! I was just gonna post that you mentioned that category in the Board News. But thankfully you remembered it too. It's a very good category. I hope we will have lots of nominees for that one!

Tigerlily - October 3, 2005 12:02 PM (GMT)
may I ask a question. Isn't this thing more like scouts badges. So it's not like only one person can get one in each category? If more people are qualified then they get them. Or am I wrong here.

The poll got me confused. Somewhere it said: I don't like competition.
But in my point of view this is not really a competition. Because seriously: if you think about it most of us can get that "crazy fangril/guy medal"

So then it would be more like: you get a badge/medal if you help a fellow D&F'er out or you made an incredibly witty remark or whatever

It that's the case we can open a nomination thread and whenever you think somebody deserves another medal you just post it there and give the reason why you want that person to get it. It's a lot let competitive that way.

You just tell me what you think about that.

:hyper: sounds great, this is more like it, I arrive on the baord and there are tons of ideas flying around.

Do the medals go where the "ELITE" and "MOD" bars are at the moment, so people can get lots, or is this more of a one time thing?

It sounds like a lot of fun either way. The only problem I can see is that some people who have a higher post count might be more well known. :thinky:

Tigerlily - October 3, 2005 02:36 PM (GMT)
hmmm, then I guess there's only one thing you can do. Get yourself known :Wink1:

I do think that some people make a great impression even if they are only here ever so often. I always like it when you come around.

Lofty - October 3, 2005 02:49 PM (GMT)
Awww your so sweet, hey are you trying to get my vote for the nicest poster. :hee:

No honest everyone here is great its going to be a tough one to decide.

Tigerlily - October 3, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
haha, it did seem a bit like that. But no, I really mean it. >W<
Awww, no I really do.

Hestia - October 3, 2005 06:00 PM (GMT)
Ah yes... it seems there is a bit of confusion around. I actually thought it was like one "winner" for a category (as the term "Best" suggests in "Best banner/Best fanfic/Best YouNameIt".

But your idea for the scoutsmedals is quite good too. I've never been a scout, so I've never understood those medal-thingies. Is it just that everyone can win a medal for being able to catch a bear or fight a bull? (completely random examples... like I've said: never been a scout.)

How can we nominate and hand out the medals best, in that scout-example? If someone was of good help to you, can you just nominate them and ask a Mod to give them a medal for being a good helper? Cuz then we do need some organising as to who has the power to deal out medals.

I was really thinking along MTV-awards lines. We pick some categories, members or participants send in nominees and then we hold a vote.
Example: for Best Banner you can send in your best banner, a Mod or Event-Organiser makes sure there is a poll and all the members can vote for 1 favourite banner. The winner then gets the Best D-and-F Banner Award, which is a medal they get in their little informationbox on the left of their posts.

Please share your thoughts on the subject! Thankies!

oooh i like this idea! should be fun!

and since im back in school, we have computer class EVERY DAY! yay!!!

onlyonekingDom - October 3, 2005 06:49 PM (GMT)
:bounce: How exciting! I love award shows. When I first saw the topic, I figured it would be like Jo said...like an MTV awards kind of thing. I like Miranda's scouts badges idea too, but that could get tricky. It would be easier in that we wouldn't have to pick just one person per category, but everyone may keep "nominating" people for a badge and it may get a little out of hand. Oh well. What do I know. Either way, it's a good idea.

Knuxs - October 3, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
:hyper: This sounds like a great idea, I think I'll leave it in your capable hands. *bows*

So far everything I've read seems like good ideas. :)

I might be able to find a code that lets you insert a medal (maybe each can be different etc) like Beth suggests in the section by your avvy. Then if you wave your mouse over it a little pop up appears and tells you what it means. But its whatever you want in the end.

Rosie - October 3, 2005 09:40 PM (GMT)
I voted I dont like competitions, because its kinda like what Mirana said. If we have only one winner, it might make the other forumers feel, i dunno, that they are as important, and if the same person keeps winning then thats going to suck monkey balls. But i like the idea of the boy scout medal thing, where more than one person can get it.

maddy - October 4, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
<insert witty lines here> HA! i win! what do I get?!?!

I really like the idea. I think it might make the winner feel good about winning something and the other nominees try harder the next time round so they could win something. (might make the board go a little bit faster, you know hehe) plus, a little bit of competition always gets people going. I know it makes me try a little harder..

Great job Jo! and Miranda! so would it only be Mod's that vote on the people? what if one of the Mod's is in the running for something?? :thinky:

Tigerlily - October 4, 2005 08:47 AM (GMT)
nah, everybody can vote. Not just mods. That doesn't seem fair.

I'm starting to see Rosies point. Especially if it's one person that wins a lot and others that win nothing.
So I'm more leaning towards the scouts badges thing. If there's one person who monitors the nomination thread I don't think there will be doubles. We just have to keep a good list.

But there's one thing that "bugs" me. It might seem a bit odd to newbies when they see all those badges. It something that's not been done before. And because of that I think people might feel strongly about it. They either like the idea or they hate it. Because Rosie's right. It does look competitive. I mean, what if a person has like 10 medals and another has none. That's not very good for your confidence.

On the other hand I'm all for awarding some people who really deserve it.

So maybe we should just reward people but post it as a list in the medal thread. If you wanna know why a person has been rewarded you can read it there but you can't see it in all the other threads.

I'm a bit incoherent I think.

Do you understand what I'm talking about?

Just tell me what you think.

Hestia - October 4, 2005 09:29 AM (GMT)
I added the "I hate competitive games" because a small part of me feels exactly like that. It's as with post counts: some people keep on rushing their posts just to be the one with the highest post count, while in fact that number says nothing about your real participation on the boards...

But I do think the handing out of medals is a nice board-activity, and I am sure that some people already have a list of nominees. However, I feel very strongly that it has to be something special, not that you can hand out a dozen of medals everyday. So then we should really decide on the categories in which we can hand out medals.

Further, the Best Banner/Best Fanfic/Best Fanart- competition could be a way to get the activity of this board up. It can be very much like the way we organised the Top banner competition earlier. Works can be send in to a events-coordinator, who puts them up anonymously (sp?), after which the members can cast their votes. In this way, members don't know who made what and therefor the vote is more honest than when friends vote only for friends. Get my drift?

But if you think the Best YouNameIt is too competitive, then we can drop it as easily as I've made it up. This is our board, we all get a say in what we can do on it.

Knuxs - October 11, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
Well I don’t mind being the non involved observer, I mean it would hardly be fair if I was in with a chance of winning too :hee: . Also like I said before I might be able to get the medals in the normal posting screens (see where it says Elite by my name) with a mouse over description, i.e. if you do it currently over the banners a tiny box should appear with the designers name in it. I’m not sure if I can do it, there are no templates to use, so it will be totally own HTML knowledge. If you defo want to proceed then I’ll seriously look into it.

I too like the boy scout thingy too, maybe simple ones "Most promising newcomer" "Poster with 1000 posts" etc stuff like that. As long as the medal/badges look different there is no reason why members cant aim to "collect" them. :)
