| Castaway Evangeline Lilly exclusively Reveals to MIKE PARKER that she and co-star Dominic Monahan fell in love on the set of the hit show. Stunning Evangeline Lilly, the hottest beauty in hit TV series Lost, has broken her silence to reveal how she’s found joy with the man of her dreams. The actress, who plays castaway plane crash survivor Kate Austin on screen, has finally come clean about her off-screen romance with co-star Dominic Monaghan. She says: “With him I feel at peace and I feel fulfilled. I couldn’t be happier if I tried.” Evangeline celebrated her 26th birthday earlier this month with Lord of the Rings heart-throb Dominic at her three-bedroom beach bungalow on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where Lost is filmed. “He has become my guiding light, my knight in shining armour and my favourite person in the whole world rolled into one” says the star. For months, the couple denied they were in love, although their romance was an open secret on set and they were regularly seen arm-in-arm in public, The relationship blossomed, says Evangeline last year when he taught her how to handle her new-found fame. She says “Dominic can’t go anywhere without being recognised. He never snubs fans, but embraces them with enthusiasm instead. “I’ve experienced that a bit and seen his reaction. He believes that fans are his supporters – and he is glad to have that support.“I’ve gotten to be very positive about that and a great many other things because of his positive attitude. This whole thing – Dominic and Lost and a taste of fame – has happened so suddenly” Just four years ago, Canadian-born Evangeline was a waitress, struggling to make it as an actress and model while wed to a handyman who helped pay for her night school classes. Her big break came when she was spotted by Lost executive producer J.J. Abrams, who insisted ABC network bosses hire her and enthuses: “Despite very little experience, she has a very confident way about her. “She’s beautiful and she’s got a great smile – even if it’s a little goofy” Evangeline is no stranger to the dangers of the wilderness in real life. After leaving school in her native Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta, Canada, she found herself working in the Philippines as a missionary aged just 18. “I lived in grass huts in a jungle in the Philippines for three weeks” she says. “I climbed trees like a native and swam in crocodile-infested rivers” Evangeline laughs at a memory which would make most people shudder with fear, adding: “There really were crocs floating around in there. But I was so friggin’ desperate to bathe I didn’t care” When she returned to Canada – fully intending to return to missionary work, she was spotted by an agent of the famous Ford Model Agency and a new dream was born. The early years trying to break- through as a model and actress were tough but Evangeline giggles at the realisation: “I guess I’ve ended up in the big time but still doing the dirty work” An action packed list of hobbies including rock-climbing and kayaking still didn’t prepare her for the gritty role of manacled bad-girl-turned-castaway-good-girl in Lost. “It infuriates me when we’re criticised for looking like ‘beautiful people’ who some how survived an air crash yet still appear glamorous. “How I wake up is exactly how my hair stays in the show. We wear almost no make-up and a lot of dirt and oil is literally, caked on us. “At the end of a day’s shoot, I’ve always got bruises all over my body, my hands are always totally scratched-up and my nails and always filthy. “I honestly think we look exactly how we would if we were genuinely stranded on a tropical island.” If most of her body ends up battered on set, Evangeline has an anatomical quirk – which deserves a place in any celebrity trivia hall of fame- she uses to entertain amazed fellow cast members. She explains “I never developed hard cartilage in my ears because I played with them since I was a baby. “As a result, I can fold each ear entirely inside out and I can put each one ’inside’ itself, so it looks as though I have no ears at all. I’ve been doing that as a party trick for years” Keeping a straight – and beautiful – face has turned her into a pin-up in America, where Maxim Magazine has this year named her second sexiest woman in the country. “I don’t know about that” she says, starting to pull back one of her flexible lugs in jest. “Seriously, I can’t imagine myself as a sex symbol and I’m amazed anyone can” Maybe a certain co-star might? At that suggestion, Evangeline blushes to her dark roots and declares “I’m still very shy and nervous and Dominic has truly brought me out of my shell professionally. “But as for our private life and who finds who or what sexy, I’m going to leave that to the imagination. Let’s just say I’m not Lost in that area” |

Dominic & Evangeline's Hush-Hush Love Life Saturday Jan 21, 2006 6:00am EST Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly CREDIT: ROGER KARNBAD / CELEBRITY PHOTO Some Lost castaways are obsessed with numbers – particularly the six cursed numerals that frequently pop up on the hit series. Dominic Monaghan, however, is all about the alphabet. "Dom is obsessed with Scrabble," says castmate Jorge Garcia, who plays Hurley. "He plays it all the time – even on his cell phone at work." Admits Monaghan: “People will say things, and I’ll Scrabble what they say in my head. I’ll think of triple word scores all the time.” He’s leaving Lost viewers equally spellbound. As washed-up rocker and reformed heroin addict Charlie, Monaghan has proved that his well-received turn as hobbit Merry in the blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy was no fantastical fluke. "He's the life of the party, but he takes work very seriously," says Lost executive producer Bryan Burk. "Coming off the $3 billion franchise, he knew this wasn't The Dominic Monaghan Show. He's been very gracious.” Yet the actor, 29, has landed more than just a thriving post-Rings career since heading to Hawaii in 2004 to shoot the ABC series. He has also developed a hush-hush romance with Lost costar Evangeline Lilly, 26, who plays Kate. Monaghan guards details about his personal life as if he were protecting his show’s top-secret plot twists. "The one thing I can try and keep sacred and special is my love life," he says, though the two have been photographed cuddling and kissing ever since they made a cozy appearance at last year’s Golden Globes. Still, he can’t resist dropping a few clues to the status of their relationship. After referencing a favorite quote about love from his idol John Lennon, he says, “When love is in your life, you feel like you’re on the right track.” So it is love then? Monaghan lets a huge grin substitute for a reply. "We both have the ability to live in the moment," he says of Lilly, "and we both are not that impressed by what is thrown at you by the industry.” Monaghan is already painfully familiar with the fickleness of fame. Born in Berlin, he grew up on German army bases (dad Austin was a science teacher for the British armed forces; mom Maureen was a nurse) before moving to Manchester, England, at 11, where he acted in plays and a British TV series before landing his big break in the Lord of the Rings films. But on the heels of his "amazing" Rings euphoria, Monaghan found himself jobless, watching as his castmates easily landed follow-up projects. "I was depressed for quite a while," he says. "I understood for the first time what it meant to be unhappy." That depression came in handy during his Lost audition for Charlie. "Here's someone who's only had a glimpse of fame, and then the door has been slammed in his face," says Monaghan. The megahit series has finally busted that door down for Monaghan, who treasures his new life on Oahu. Still, he’s learned to prepare himself for the run of good luck to end. "I can pick it all up and go," he says. "Aside from my car, everything I own fits in a suitcase." |
