Title: Would you donate your organs?
Description: If you died
Fawkes - August 26, 2005 07:34 PM (GMT)
Over here (UK) we are having a donation week, basically its a lot of TVshows about organ donation. And I suspect it wants more people to get a doner card. Which means if you die say from a car crash and they can use your organs to help others then that card bascially tells the doctors that's what you want.
I know its morbid, but it something which makes you think. If you needed a organ you would want others to donate for you, but is it right to not want to give something back too? Anyway if you have any thoughts I'd love you hear them. (Rolly)
At the moment I'm not sure either way. I know its so selfish, but I cant seem to change my mind about it. :(

That issue was discussed in Holland not so long ago. I still don't have a donor card. I went to a website to register, but they made me print a form and I had to fax it so I forgot about it.
I think I should donate. I mean, I'm dead so I don't need anything anymore. It's on very rare occasions that they can actually use organs. They don't want old people's kidneys or hearts or whatever. So when yo die old they might not be able to use anything. But if I died tomorrow (am not planning on that) they could use some of it. I'm healthy. Enough with the rantings. I forgot my point. *stupid me*
At this point I think it would be more useful to donate blood. They need lots of that every day. I'm just too big of a chicken to do that.

yea like miranda said, youre dead, what do you need it for? ill probably donate mine, but its not like i can make a decision at this age, so ill wait until im older to be sure.
have yall heard about people who donate their bodies to science? so that medical students can learn more and stuff like that. i think only the people whos lives were dedicated to science really do it though.

I have a donorcard, but it's not even a rule that you should always carry it. They are very careful when it comes to donor-organs in the Netherlands. You have to be under 60, I believe, die in a hospital and you can't have had any serious illments (like cancer) in your life.
Most of the times, the organs that are used for transplantation are from people who died in accidents like car-crashes. They always check with close relatives (parents or a husband or wife) before deciding if they can need the organs. It's a lot of hassle, that's why the waiting lists are so long. That's also why I decided to sign the donorcard, even though the thought kind of freaks me out. But still, if I die young, I want to give life to someone else. They can have my organs, and my parents know it. They have donorcards themselves, although my father isn't even suitable because he has had cancer twice.
Donating your whole body really freaks me out, although without people who want that, the medical technology probably wouldn't have been this far. Every med-student learns how to cut and sew on dead people.
If you have to make a decision - in Holland every year all the nineteen-year olds get a form with which they can show their choice - please consider the facts: organs are really needed and the lists are long...
[/end sermon]

The first show I watched in the BBC seasons was very imformative. It said that there are 8,000 people in the UK waiting for transplants and only 1,000 get them, with 450 others dying while they are waiting :( (this was all in a typical year, 2004)
I cant sort of understand why people dont want to do it. Its really not something you want to think about is it. Its not like you have to donate when you are alive or anything, yet I still feel funny about doing it. I cant really see a reason, its like a spider, so small and harmless but I still go running when I see one.

Uhu, the thought scared me too, when I got the information package when I turned 19, and had to fill in if I wanted to be registered as an organdonor. But I did it anyway: I know it's the right thing to do, and that my parents will make the right decision if I ever end up in a position to be a potential organdonor.
Recently, I heard another good argument: what if it is you who suddenly needs an organdonation, while there's nobody signing in on the donorregistration. Just the thought that I'm registered, gives me some hope that others have done the same, and can possibly help me out if it is ever needed.

i would donate my organs. as long as they stitch me up in the end, they can have them and put them to better use. what am i going to need with them when i am buried/cremated?

I have carried a donor card for ages now.
I'd be happy for anything to be used, as I won't be needing them anymore when I'm dead so they may as well be put to good use helping someone who does!

There is no way I would donate my body to medical students etc, I know that it would probably be useful to them if I did but the thought just freaks me out!
I answered yes, but now I think about it, mine might not be that great to donate. I had Cancer a couple of years ago which affected my lungs mostly and kidneys, so I don't know if anyone would even have them, even though I've now been treated for it. But I would donate my organs, I won't need them anymore so they might aswell go to someone who does need them!
I would also love to give blood, but I'm terrified of injections. It's a crap excuse, but I just can't face it!

I'm still undecided about this.
On my license, its says that i'm an organ donor, but i'm still not sure whether I want to be or not.
I'm sure when I'm older, i'll change my mind and be like YEAH TAKE THEM!!! I DONT NEED THEM lol..
but right now, i'm just don't know.
Vixen - January 30, 2006 12:40 PM (GMT)
They can have whatever they want and need when I die I won't need any of it and I'm being cremated so no worries about open caskets or any of that. I also think I will donate my body to science, if I can donate organs and do that, that would be great. But if I can only do one of the other, I'll have to think about it, organs are needed, but research done on dead bodies could give valuable insights to cures for diseases in the future. :)

One thing that I know, is that I'll NEVER donate my face.
You know, how they just did that first face transplant thing. I mean, I know the woman was pretty bad, but its my face, and I dont think I would want anyone to have that.
Organs, maybe. Face, no.

Where do u get a donor card from?
I cant say i have given this much thought as it is a bit depressing, but i would be willing to donate my organs. I would be dead after all so if it means my organs can help save another live or even extend it, then im ok by that. ^_^
Meriagrin Brandytook - March 5, 2006 08:18 AM (GMT)
I've carried a donor card since I was 14, I've been on the donor register since I was 18. I firmly believe that if my body can be used to help save someone else when I'm dead then it should be used. It'll be of no more use to me.

I'm not sure yet if I want to donate my organs..I'm currently thinking of not doing it....It just scares me too much right now, and to be honest I've never thought about it before..
I haven't had a card when I turned 19, although I live in the Netherlands, at least I don't remember getting one..
My flatmate is a medical student..the things she tells me they do with the bodies of people who gave their bodies to science is just too creepy...
Did you know that the oldest woman in the world, who died last year being one-hundred-something and lived in the Netherlands, donated her body to science? She gave her body to the same University I'm attending...to give scientists the opportunity to discover how she got so old...I think that's just so awesome of her...I mean she was about 110 and she was still clearly thinking about the future of menkind..
