Title: Brain Teasers
Description: You need random luck and logic for this

Knuxs - February 23, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
I love brain teasers. When I can work them out, when I cant it drives me up the wall. >{>

Below are some I like, how good are you at solving them? Answers in a bit. ~Wink~ Meanwhile have a guess or two, or post your own.

SORTED = someone has correctly worked it out below, stop if you want to have a go at working them out first.

1) You are in a dark room with a candle, a wood stove and a gas lamp. You only have one match, so what do you light first? SORTED

2) Would you rather a crocodile attack you or an alligator? SORTED

3) Which word, if pronounced right, is wrong, but if pronounced wrong is right? SORTED

4) I went on a trip last week. The traffic was moderate and the journey took two and a half hours. On the return journey, the traffic was similar, but I made it back in 150 minutes. How come? SORTED!

5) My neighbour recently moved in down the road and has five children. Unusually, half of the children are girls. How can this be? SORTED

One of my all time faves:

"The following sentence is true. The previous sentence is false". Which is true?

Have fun trying to work them out ~@~{ , post answers/guesses in a readable format

fubar231 - February 23, 2005 10:01 PM (GMT)
Answer to #4: The time is the same. 150 minutes = 2 and a half hours.

RonjaTook - February 23, 2005 10:08 PM (GMT)
Answer to # 1:
The stove because I'm such a freezing person. <lol> No. Forget this.

The candle because I can light the lamp and the stove with it as well.

Knuxs - February 23, 2005 11:47 PM (GMT)
Pats right (^&> , Sorry Marina your wrong ><

Rosie - February 24, 2005 03:57 AM (GMT)
These are my answers/guesses

#1- you light the match first
#2- Neither

ithildin28 - February 24, 2005 03:58 AM (GMT)
Answer to #2: I'd rather the crocodile attack the alligator.

Knuxs - February 24, 2005 10:15 AM (GMT)
Yep, the question is a double meaning sentence, so if you put a pause after "you", then a new meaning becomes clear.

And yes Rosie you light the match first <lol>

Meriagrin Brandytook - February 24, 2005 10:29 AM (GMT)
#3 the word is WRONG, (if it's pronounced correctly it's wrong, and if it's pronounced incorrectly it's still wrong)

Knuxs - February 24, 2005 10:43 AM (GMT)
Thats spot on as well <--> . Only question 5) left to go.

maddy - February 24, 2005 11:04 AM (GMT)
Answer to #5 At the hospital, where the new neighbours went to to have their children, the baby that they gave birth to was only a half child - female- and in another ward, there was a half boy born.
Sooo, they stiched them together and then the two families played paper, scissors, rock to see who got the child...

And your naighbour won!!!!!

So there you go.

(Just to let you know, I think it is actually impossible to give birth to half a child!!!)

ithildin28 - February 25, 2005 01:48 PM (GMT)
I don't know for # 5 - I keep wanting to say, because usually half the children are boys... #haha#

Knuxs - February 25, 2005 03:35 PM (GMT)
<lol> Sorry both wrong...this is another wording based question the answer is simple...maybe so simple you might just miss it completly.

maddy - February 26, 2005 07:23 AM (GMT)
I GET IT NOW! I KNOW IT - I KNOW IT - I KNOW IT!!!!!!

#5 Answer
All of the children are girls!!!!

YAY <-->

(although I still think my half-child answer was great) . . . . . . .

Knuxs - February 26, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
YOu are....correct! (woW> That was much quicker than I thought, this board is full of smart folks!

1) Five girls took part in a race. Alison finished before Bunty but behind Clare. Debby finished before Emma but behind Bunty. What was the finishing order? SORTED

2) Study this paragraph and all things in it. What is vitally wrong with it? Actually, nothing in it is wrong, but you must admit that it is most unusual. Don't just zip through it quickly, but study it scrupulously. With luck you should spot what is so particular about it and all words found in it. Can you say what it is? Tax your brains and try again. Don't miss a word or a symbol. It isn't all that difficult? SORTED

3) How many legs does an elephant have if you call its trunk a leg? SORTED

4) What belongs to you but other people use it more than you? SORTED

5) Everything Jimmy Red owns is red, he lives in a red bungalow and his chairs are red, his tables are red. His ceiling, walls and floor are all red. All of his clothes are red, his shoes are red, even his carpet, television and phone are red. What colour are his stairs? SORTED

Good luck (BouN)

Melagomaniac - February 26, 2005 11:43 PM (GMT)
#5 - Jimmy's home doesn't have stairs: it's a bungalow.

Hestia - February 26, 2005 11:48 PM (GMT)
Okie, here are my answers, I won't answer everything to keep the 'competition' open:

3. One

4. Your name

Knuxs - February 26, 2005 11:51 PM (GMT)
Well done you two! But Jo your number 3 is wrong. To easy are they <lol> I'll have to dig out my books for the next round I think....

fubar231 - February 26, 2005 11:56 PM (GMT)
#1 ) Order is: Clare, Alison, Bunty, Debby, Emma.

Tigerlily - February 27, 2005 11:48 AM (GMT)
Can I post a brain teaser. Don't know if it's to easy. We'll see.
Oh, and it's a bit hard to explain so bare with me.

There's this guy who has to get across a river in a wee tiny boat. With him he has a cabbage, a goat and a wolf. He can only take one thing in the boat with him to the other side. He has to get them all safely to the other side. However, bare in mind. goats eat cabbages and wolves eat goats. How is he gonna get them to the other side????

Is this clear????

Hestia - February 27, 2005 01:50 PM (GMT)
Yes, I know that!

First, the boatsman takes the goat to the other side. Then, he sails back and takes the cabbages to the other side. To prevent the goat from eating the cabbage, he takes the goat back to the starting point, and then brings the wolf to the other side. Then he goes back again to collect the goat, and voila, he has the three items on the other side of the river.

Tigerlily - February 27, 2005 03:10 PM (GMT)
Bleh, I knew this was too easy. Jo, you're correct.

I just thought of one of my all time favourite TV shows. That also had lots of tricky riddles. It's called Fort Boyard (hope I wrote that correctly). It was such an awesome show.

Was that with the people who were sent to a fort in the middle of a sea and they had to do quite dangerous games and activities? Oh man, I loved that show!

Tigerlily - February 27, 2005 04:18 PM (GMT)
Yep, that's the one. They had to collect keys. And there was this really annoying zandloper. (sorry don't know the English word). They always had to be out of a room before the zandloper ran out of time or they would get locked in.

Hestia - February 27, 2005 04:44 PM (GMT)
Yes, curse the zandloper! Oh, got a dictionary somewhere near me *rummages around* it's an hour-glass! Of course... Hermione had an hour-glass too in PoA!

I can't even remember that much about the show, it must have been on TV a long time ago. In highschool I watched it on a French channel once, to improve my French listening-skills. Not that I paid much attention to the language, I just loved watching the assignments and tasks.

Is it that the paragraph doesn't contain the most popular letter in the English Language?

There aren't any "E's" in it!

And here's a word based one from me!

Punctuate this list of words so they make sense:

That that is is that that is not is not - SORTED

Knuxs - February 27, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
Yep thats right! <--> Only question 3) of mine left to go now. If anyone else has any post them up. (Rolly)

Mmmm, 'fraid not Knuxs, you're not correct.

As for your number three, just 'cos you call an elephant's trunk a leg doesn't make it so. I'd say it still has four legs. But then I may be missing something!

LG

Tigerlily - February 27, 2005 11:02 PM (GMT)
how about: That, that is, is that, that is. Not is not.

And I've got another riddle:
someone at a party introduces you to your mother’s only sister’s husband’s sister in law. He has no brothers. What do you call this lady?

Sorry Tigerlily, that's not right either.

In answer to your riddle. I think I might call her Mum! :)

LG

Knuxs - February 27, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
Ack! Thats a hard one LG. Any clues <>(O/ Have you any more we might be able to try. Also you were correct again! With the trunk and leg one.

Miranda's was tricky, I dont think I would have got it without some deep thinking, so if your right LG you either knew it, or have a very sharp mind!

I'll try and dig some more out in a day or so, but I need sleep now. >N<

maddy - February 28, 2005 12:10 AM (GMT)
#3

the elephant still has 4 legs coz your only *calling* its trunk a leg

Kella - February 28, 2005 02:10 AM (GMT)
I think I have one.

A bell rings, a rope breaks, a man dies.

Now all you guys need to do is figure that one out. How did the man die...what happened. It may have been heard before...and it took a two groups of 7 of us to figure this one out in like... 3 hours. So either we aren't bright...or something. But it's a thing where you ask me a question to gather information...and I answer with yes or no...and you tell me the story of what happened when you think you have it figured out.

Good luck... :D

maddy - February 28, 2005 11:00 AM (GMT)
Hey Kella, this is like one of those Logical Thinking things right!!! I love those things. You can only answer yes or no right? Okalie-dokalie......

Did the bell have anything to do with the rope breaking?

(is that a stupid question????) <craze>

Knuxs - as for a clue to the "that that is is that that is not is not" one all I can say is you need four commas and two fullstops. <Ton?

Kella - I think I have a solution to your problem but I'll wait to see if anyone else gets it first. ;)
